This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In a math classroom, we start every day with a warm up where students can practice skills for the day. I would like to use whiteboards to spice up the learning and I do not have materials to write on them. This is a great tool to assess my students. Please help!
My student population consists of inner city youth, many students are at-risk,or from transient and single parent households.
Ninety-nine percent of our students are African American, with 85% of our students qualify for free and reduced priced lunch. The majority of our students fall into the low/poverty range category. Most students that attend our school are bussed from a large metropolitan inner city seeking the opportunity for a better education in a safe environment.
My Project
Most students do not have their materials for family financial reasons. Due to recent state budget cuts and our district coming off of the deficit elimination plan, we are attempting to be more fiscally responsible in our purchases (eliminating paper usage). Students will use the whiteboards during their math class to assist in the learning process.
Funding this project will help students move from arithmetic to algebraic thought processes by giving students the opportunity to use these materials in the classroom, during testing, and for assignments.
I will also be able to formatively assess my students as they can hold up their answers to each problem in class.
