Need for Speed? Need to Read! (Books for Car Lovers)

Help me give my students some books that are just as "fast" and "furious[ly]" entertaining as the cars they love!

My Students

My students have heart, even when they're hit hard. Many of them come from diverse backgrounds. Some have families that struggle to make ends meet, but they come to school regardless. Several are immigrants, or children of immigrants. Some will be the first person in their family to attend college. Many of them are also painfully unaware of their potential. I'm determined to empower them.

We have a goal to each read 30+ books this year, and we are well on our way there, but we need your help!

A large number of my so-called "reluctant readers" just need to find that book that will be their breakthrough into seeing themselves as readers. I have noticed that year after year, a great deal of these students are motorheads. They love the Fast and the Furious series, and some of them even show up to class with grease from the auto shop on their hands! They need books with characters that have the same hands-on interests and passions that they do. Can you help these students find their drive as readers?

My Project

We intend to get the mileage out of these donations...pun intended. We read for 15 minutes every day in our class, and students are encouraged to check out our class library books and read more at home. New books are labeled by genre and protected with plastic coverings so they can be enjoyed by students for years to come. New books are also spotlighted to increase their circulation. I also interview the students about their reading to increase their engagement and help them to find their next favorite book. Reading every day is how we create more readers!

Some of my students don't even realize that books for car lovers EXIST, so let's help them shift their mindset!

As they read books with characters who are just as car-crazy as they are, students will see themselves in those characters' shoes, and they will see themselves more and more as readers. There are books out there for everyone, and this project will help a new group of students to see that!
