My students need small group materials such as reading comprehension activity stations, nonfiction reading cards, language arts test prep folders, 5-minute vocabulary practice cards and read about immigration comprehension cards.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” ― Dr. Seuss.
I want my students to be able to read at their grade level so that they can access information just as their general ed peers have.
My school is a cornerstone of a rural community with a high poverty rate. Our school staff strives to provide the students with a positive, safe, and nurturing environment where they can grow academically and as individuals. My students are those who require specialized instruction in order to experience success. They face hurdles that cannot be comprehended by the majority. They have an incredible amount of potential, but must first be given the resources to overcome the disabilities that block their access to that potential. The most common learning hurdle that I have seen with my student involves the many facets that contribute to reading well. While I have a nice well decorated room to include a reading rug that I purchased I don't have any books at all. Resource room teachers are not given any book, leaving me with buying all materials needed to succeed.
My Project
The fact that students with special needs struggle with long text is why I chose all these great small passage resources. These resources allow for students to work on common core standards at their individual reading level. Students love to learn from one another as well as working independently. These resources allow for that flexibility. Also, these resources allow for a reinforcement to what was taught in whole group instruction.
These resources that focus on the common core standards; such as main idea, citing evidence, supporting details allow my students to practice skills that are needed to succeed.
I chose non fiction and fiction material since students are expected to be exposed to both kinds of text.
These resources can be used for intervention as well as enrichment. Students learn best when given materials they can learn from. Hope you can donate to this great cause!
