My Students
"The unexamined life is not worth living" are the infamous words of Plato, and the motto of our small, progressive high school. We want our students to be able to monitor and self-assess their growth over time and develop a rich portfolio of their learning but lack the digital tools to do it.
We are in a Title 1 school in New York with a diverse student population.
Some of our students have recently arrived from a foreign country while most live in high poverty areas throughout the city. We pride ourselves with working closely with our student population to develop individualized learning goals.
My Project
Unlike many schools, we use a portfolio-based assessment system, in lieu of Regents testing in all subject areas except English. Currently, we have NO scanners in our school for our students to use to save the work they have done for their classes. Being able to store their handouts, projects and tests in the online digital portfolios will go a long way in helping our students become self-reflective about their work over time. For example, a 10th grade student can easily go online to their digital portfolio our school has set-up for them (and have access anywhere) to re-read her final English essay from 9th grade and be able to distinguish what skills he/she has acquired, and what areas he/she needs to work on. Very few of our students have a scanner at home and having a fast, commercial-grade scanner will make it efficient for our students to be able to do this in the classroom without taking up valuable instruction time.
We live in an increasingly digital world and our students need to be able to digitally store their work for not only the purposes of assessment but for institutions of high learning (who are increasingly asking to see these) and for the students to have a place where they can see their high school work as they grow older.
