This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a support program inside a community school. I'm incredibly lucky to teach regents English, psychology, environmental science and art to standard assessment high schoolers in a small-class setting, with the hope of sending them off to college with the skills and will to succeed. Even though my students have IEPs, the expectations for them are high. They still find ways to surprise me with their creativity, their resiliency, and their capacity to learn.
The ability of these special needs teens is not determined by their disability, but by their incredible resilience.
My job is to push their English skills high enough to pass the 11th grade Common Core regents exams and provide them the support to learn in a therapeutic setting. By teaching them literacy and writing from their sophomore year until they graduate, I am able to infuse common core skills in a fun, exciting and personal way! My students pass their regents exams and aim for college matriculation.
My Project
The last eighteen months have definitely been unprecedented times for my students! But we're all so grateful to be back in the classroom. In order to stay out of quarantine students and staff need to maintain safety measures.
In order to stay safe in the classroom, students need to wear their masks and colorful masks will inspire compliance in our classroom.
Teens are having a hard time shifting to the new normal of wearing masks in class, and having masks they think are attractive can increase the rate of success.
