Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the most energetic third graders this year.
My class is composed of ten students with disabilities.
My students have made great strides in the school year. My students are of African-American and Hispanic descent with 99% of them receiving free or reduced-price school meals.
I tell my students, "You can make a difference."
My students are very hard workers, and regardless of their surroundings in their neighborhood, my students come to a class dedicated to working.
They know that once they step in the classroom they are ready to work and learn new content. I love it when I see my students learn and apply what they have learned in the class and use it in their real life. My students are bright and enthusiastic students ready to learn. My class is located in a low-income area. A large percentage of the student population qualifies for free lunch. My students are not provided with opportunities to experience new things. My students are bright and very dedicated students. My students need real-life experiences in order to make real-life connections.
My Project
I serve a community of the working poor. This means that although many of our parents work more than one job, most are still on some form of public assistance. Currently, we are in need of classroom desks.
My students each need a sturdy, reliable desk at school.
One that they can do their assignments on.
Being able to do assignments on a sturdy, reliable desk at school is a basic necessity. Students should not have to worry about whether too much erasing will or will not wobble the desk until the legs come loose. Students should not worry that pushing away from the desk to line up, may fold the desk's legs and send it crashing to the floor! Students should not be concerned with whether the adjustable height of the desk will crash down on their legs unexpectedly while they are working. The tops of desks should not pop off while a student is rummaging inside to find a book. With 15 new desks, students can focus more on learning and less on the reliability of their desk.
Flexible seating is a transition from the typical sitting in a desk, to sitting in comfortable and movable furniture. The purpose of flexible seating is so that students can work in a space that works for their learning style. When students are up and moving on a regular basis, more oxygen is flowing to their brain, they are more engaged, and more motivated to learn. With a standing desk that adjusts from sitting to standing allows for students to do just that. It would allow for students to choose between sitting and standing and turn a normal/typical table into options for students.
