My Students

My students are high tech and expect their lessons and assignments to reflect the newest technologies. It is a tough order, but I do my best to keep their interest and curiosity levels up!

Our diverse school is located in a wonderful city that serves one of the largest military bases in the country.

We reach several hundred children with military connected families, as well as staff members who have a spouse in the military. We have students who have traveled around the world and some who have never left this city. Many of our students have a parent deployed. All economic levels are represented, as well as students with English as their second language. All of the children mix well together and enjoy learning. We are experiencing major budget cuts in NC and do not have money for extra enrichment that is essential to academic growth.

My Project

The Nook eReader I am requesting is amazing. This is state of the art technologies for a classroom. Assigning books to be read will have 26 children jumping at the chance to spend 20 minutes reading the book on an eReader. This eReader is perfect for children because it is interactive and in color. The books can also be read aloud, which helps some of my students that need the extra support to read a grade level book. We read books and then take a Reading Counts assessment to check for comprehension and evaluation skills. Even though the eReader is the latest technology, the reading itself is not new. It still holds true, the more students read, the better reader they will become. Their vocabulary increases, their understanding of themselves and the world around them. They also learn to turn on their imaginations and become a part of the book they are reading. This Nook eReader will get my students involved in reading and develop a love of stories and what they can learn.

The Nook eReader will have my children clamoring to read.

That is exactly what all teachers want! It is an expensive one time purchase, but the eBooks are less expensive than buying and finding places to store hard copies of books. A Nook will soon look like a book and as long as students are reading and learning, our world will become a better place. Please help fund this project!
