"Senorita!" is the calling I hear all day long as 27 students squeeze together to peer at a tiny story page. 80% of what we learn is visual and school eye screenings only catch 5% of vision problems. Even if my students were prescribed glasses, many of my children don't have the resources to own them.
My students are what the substitutes call "lively and humorous" but I love them to death.
All of them qualify for government free or reduced priced breakfast and lunch. All of them also come from Latino homes in Texas. This means beyond teaching them to read and write in Spanish, I also have to teach them to read and write in English, which is a foreign concept to them.
I am hoping that with the ELMO projector I will be able to share stories with my students. The ELMO projector will make it so that they can visually follow along in the text with me. It will not matter that budgets only allot for 10 books, all of my students will be able to read the same material at the same time because of the projector.
I want to expose my students to as many genres of text as I can like poetry, science articles, and theater plays.
I want to expose my students to things that they would never have learned about through their own limited urban environment. I believe that once a student finds his favorite text he is then able to make the greater connection of what he wants as a career and what he will do to change the world. We already have an overhead projector all we need is your help getting an ELMO!
