My students come from low socioeconomic homes. Many of their parents are forced to work out-of-state to provide for their families while the children are raised solely by one or two elderly grandparents.
While they are with me, I focus on their strengths and interests.
I ensure I am creating a warm and loving environment by greeting them with a hug and complimenting them on their shoes, clothing and anything they feel proud of. I know they are faced with many hardships at home, with much separation anxiety, never knowing when they will see their parents next. But my classroom is a loving warm environment where they can relax and rely on me to always be there, to believe in them, cheering them on, in their learning endeavors.
My Project
My students live in a loud, urban city, with cement sidewalks and buildings on every corner. These materials will allow my students to work and play while engaging with natural materials.
Students will be able to use the various woven baskets, clay, wooden manikins, and nature blocks to learn and play without distractions.
Most toys and materials, which we currently have in the classroom, have bright colors, lights and music. While all those features are fun for some students, for others they are distracting and overstimulating.
At the dramatic play center students will be able to pretend play with the woven baskets pretending to go on a picnic. At the art center students will be able to build sculptures using clay and wooden beads. At the block center students will be able to build trees using nature blocks. There is so much natural materials have to offer, let’s allow city kids to enjoys some of them!
