About My Students

Emily, Anthony, and Kevin are ingenious engineers, and they want to assure that their classmates will succeed this school year. After their classes began using the staplers at each of their tables, these three students realized we had a problem: constant need of staples. Plus, the small staplers at each of the tables were broken, or could be easily broken with so many small parts. Through discussion and research, stapleless staplers were naturally the right option: being green, while saving green!

My students have already decided that we want to have a greener classroom. Being able to come up with this ingenious project allows them to be comfortable with out of the box thinking, which will translate with them as they progress throughout their academic careers. Giving them the problem and having them solve it, while also encouraging them to be empathetic to the environmental crisis we face encourages my students to engineer their own ideas about how the world can successfully be more green. Using these skills as they get older will allow my students the capabilities to come up with new and successful ways to be green themselves, and within all facets of their lives.

In Their Own Words

After Ms. S asked us to think of new ways to help the classroom be green this school year, we discussed the issues we were having with the staplers. There were either never enough staples for all the people at the table to attach their work together, or the staplers just wouldn't work. Ms. S, or other students, would then have to stop what they were doing to help out those tables that needed the supplies. With the stapleless staplers, this won't be an issue anymore!

Since it was our idea, we will make sure that each of our classes manage the use of the staplers responsibly. We will be in charge of handing out the staplers each time they are needed, or of creating a place where they can be kept so that way they are always near.

By writing this proposal, we hope to help our classmates, and future classes, be able to make the right choice and be green when they need to attach papers together. Depending on staplers that use staples stops us from learning and adds on to our waste footprint. Making the right choice now will help others see it is possible.
