Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
HG Middle School is in the heart of Miami Dade County public schools, which is the 4th largest in the nation. Moreover, HGMS is the largest middle school in the North region of Miami- Dade county, where a great number my students come from underprivileged homes where a clear majority speak English as a second language and more than 75% of our student population receive free or reduced lunch. I teach science to 180 middle school students who are learning English as a second language and students with mild learning disabilities. Despite my students low socio-economic standing, language and learning barriers, they come to my class ready and willing to TRY THEIR BEST!
These students love when they learn something new and they can share their knowledge with their friends and family.
My students are willing and able to overcome the most challenging of circumstances when given the right resources.
My Project
I will be using the laptop as a teaching tool to model how create a science fair project and collect data using graphs and charts generated by using different software such as Power Point (PPT) and Microsoft Word. This project will provide students with needed supplies and opportunities for them to practice their learning. Given the recent weather related events in our area, many of us were without electricity for an extended period time (about 5 to 15 days, if not longer), so I want the students to research natural energy sources.
To carry out this unit my students need a computer to research various energy sources and how they might design a system to sustain that energy.
Electricity is an essential part of our daily lives, but many energy sources are harmful the environment. I plan to have my students read about inventions in alternative energy sources, they will work in groups to plan and build a model of a system to generate energy. I want my students to be able to learn about science through hands-on experiences. The students will use the laptop in class and at home to create their model.
I want my students to have these experiences and love learning. Most importantly to be able to stay safe before, during, and after a Hurricane or other natural disaster which may affect our area again.
More than half of students from low‑income households
