This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
MHS has a strong culture of inclusion and acceptance. Nearly 30% of our students have IEPs for learning needs, many DHH students, 85% Free and reduced lunch, and 88 percent of our students come from non-dominant cultures. In 9th grade Identity and Relationships, which uses PBL to teach English through an Ethnic Studies lens, students learn about nondominant perspectives on history, culture and community through projects and literature, and learn how these groups face and fight discrimination and celebrate culture. In this class, we already explore the histories of African Americans, Chicanos, and various Asian communities. Through this project, we will add and explore the perspectives of the Native American community.
In this project, we will explore Native American history and culture beginning with a comic book produced by our local tribal council.
We will then go more in depth into literature through reading Apple (Skin to the Core) and Braiding Sweetgrass and through a visit from the Kumeyaay elders and youth who are native to our region. We will research and write about native plants that were used by the Kumeyaay to create QR codes with links to infographics. Finally, we will plant a Kumeyaay garden with signage and QR codes in which students can access and enjoy nature during the school day as a place of peace and reconnection.
