Alexa plays soft, calming music while students work, helping create a focused, comfortable learning environment where students feel less stressed and more engaged. \r\n\r\nThe hands-on supplies have been just as impactful. Highlighters help students define project expectations and identify key points of reference in texts and instructions, making complex tasks feel more manageable. The boxes help store Post-it notes, allowing students to mark important ideas, annotate readings, and organize their thoughts during projects. Students are especially excited about using these tools because they give them ownership over their learning, color-coding, tagging, and visually organizing information in ways that make sense to them.\r\n\r\nThis technology and these materials have been particularly beneficial for students who struggle with focus, organization, or confidence. This project was the first time I had tried incorporating gardening into my 9th grade English/Ethnic Studies class, as well as the first time I had given students an opportunity to explore Native American cultural resources, and I wasn't exactly sure I could pull off the project in 6 months. \r\n\r\nWe began by reading the books your donations enabled us to purchase: Braiding Sweetgrass and parts of Apple,Skin to the Core, as well as the book Indigenous People's History of the United States, Young People's Edition. We also read the recently published Kumeyaay comic history, a history of our local Native American tribal group. We learned about the harsh treatment of Native communities, and wrote about how their connections to nature helped them survive and remain resilient and maintain their connections to their spiritual roots. \r\n\r\nNext, students gathered in groups to research, budget, and plan the creation of a 400 square foot Wellness Garden for students to enjoy during the school day. They pitched their plans in presentations to funders who had offered funding for students to create a native plant garden. And finally, students built their garden and planted plants. All told, the project -- from conception to planting -- took about 6 months, with 2 months of student work. STudent reflections show that they understand the connections between native communities and nature, and feel gratitude for being able to build a garden with lasting impact.\r\n\r\nWe are grateful for your donation to this project. When we first unveiled the new materials, the students burst into excitement there were curious glances whispers of \"What's new learning tools?\" and eager hands reaching in to explore. That moment immediately turned into an opportunity to teach: we explained that these weren't just fun gadgets, they are tools to help them focus, regulate their bodies, and learn better.\r\n\r\nSince their arrival, we've begun using these tools strategically during silent work longer reading sessions and transitions when sitting still and staying engaged tends to be harder. I observed a student who usually struggles to stay in his seat choose a quiet tactile ring gently rotate it while listening to instructions and then contribute without fidgeting distraction. This aligns with best-practice guidance: fidgets need to be implemented with clear guidelines and used as tools not toys to truly benefit learning.\r\n\r\nMoving forward our next steps are to monitor how each student uses the fidgets rotate in different types so novelty doesn't wear off and build student voice into the process. We'll introduce a \"fidget check in\" where students reflect on how the tool helped their focus and what they might need next. We'll also design a respectful sharing station so students take ownership of the tools choose appropriately and care for them. Thanks to your thoughtful support our students especially those from low income backgrounds with limited access now have the resources to engage more fully and confidently in our inclusive learning environment.","fullyFundedDate":1760730360335,"projectUrl":"project/fidget-to-focus-stress-relief-tools-for/9749143/","projectTitle":"Fidget to Focus: Stress Relief Tools for the Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lese-Sauvajot","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7391287_orig.png?crop=278,278,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1688165656992","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mjlesesauvajot"},{"teacherId":10278117,"projectId":9756843,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation of Nintendo Switch consoles to our Gaming Club!
