Native American Students Need Science Equipment

My students need science model kits that will allow them to "see things" they otherwise would not. Magnifying glasses will help each student explore the unseen world.

My Students

My students have had virtually no science experience until they reach the fifth grade. The state then tests the students on their science knowledge. We also have textbooks that are 25 years old (I am personally purchasing my students newer textbooks).

My students love science, but we have no budget for classroom supplies.

Any supplies or items that are not essential, are expected to be purchased by the teacher. My students all live on an Indian Reservation where unemployment is rampant and is more than three times the state average. Nearly 90% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. I want to instill in my students a love of science.

My Project

With no classroom budget, let alone a science budget, something like magnifying glasses will be a low cost way to introduce my students to science and the world around them. We will be able to use the magnifying glasses to explore and come in closer to those living things around us. We also study the solar system and the poster will be a great thing for the students to see and reference. We already have a telescope (thank you Donors Choose) that the students use in the evenings to view the heavens. The chart will give them a tangible resource to compare to what they see through the telescope.

My students love science, but that love will be lost quickly if they only have 25 year old books and no hands-on experiences.

The items I'm requesting will give the students many hands-on opportunities to participate in class and to learn so much more. Please help me keep the thrill of science burning in my students minds. You can make a difference in my students futures.
