My Project
For this project, I am seeking materials to teach high school art students traditional Native American beading techniques. Students will create a peyote stitch keychain. They will begin this project by researching the significance of beading in indigenous cultures.
In Indigenous cultures, beading holds immense cultural significance, serving as a way to record and express stories, traditions, identity, social status, and spirituality through intricate designs on clothing and accessories, often acting as a visual language connecting people to their heritage and ancestors; the act of beading itself can also be considered a form of prayer or meditation, signifying deep connection to their community and the natural world.
I have several students who are Native American, and have learned beading techniques that they would like to share with their classmates. This project will give everyone an opportunity to consider the significance of this art practice in different cultures.
