Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my students learn about the professional printmaking process with the purchase of a printing press. This will allow them to create prints with even, high-quality ink distribution. We currently use a spoon to transfer the ink from the printing block onto a paper. A press will be more efficient.

I teach Art at a school in which the majority of our students qualify for the state free and reduced lunch program.

This means that a large percentage of students at my school come from low-income families. Many of their parents struggle with multiple jobs. Many of their parents don't speak English. The school I teach at was the first school in my district to go into State Regulated Program Improvement, based on low test scores. Every year, these students have managed to bring their scores higher and higher. This is a community in which the teachers and students work together to make improvements. We have a special program for Hearing Impaired students at my school. It is amazing to see these challenged students welcomed into general education classes. The students I teach have heart, and they have goals. So many of them find the good, when faced with tough situations. I want to inspire them to create. Art offers a voice to so many that may otherwise not be heard.

My Project

The printing press and its components will allow my students to create high quality prints. They will be able to see their own carved and etched designs turned into professional quality art. I will start by teaching a unit on the history of printmaking, and follow up with lessons about the WPA National Park Prints that were done from 1938-1941. These historic images are familiar to many from the postcards that are still popular today. I want my students to see what they can create with their own set of hands. Websites that sell hand-made things, have created a resurgence in the desire for all things hand-made. Printmaking is a genre of art that I've seen people with a variety of talents excel in; but it is also a genre that is not often taught. I would like to inspire my students with the National Parks Prints, to create print designs for parks that they frequent. The printing press is a machine that can be used in my classes for many years to come.

This is a project that will allow students with a variety of talents to excel.

Some students are good at drawing, some at sculpting and etching. Other students have an eye for graphic design. All of these elements are components of the National Parks-Inspired Printmaking Project. We will focus on the of the Visual Arts Content Standards: Creative Expression 2.1 and Historical and Cultural Context 3.2. Students will gain confidence in their artistic skills as they create original prints.
