National Geographic Books to Increase Literacy!

My students need 12 sets of National Geographic Readers books to expose them to new science topics and improve their literacy and communication skills!

My Students

My students are in high school and struggle with reading, some of my students are unable to recognize any letters and still they all LOVE books!

I teach in a self contained middle/high school special education classroom.

My students are extremely creative, intelligent, curious, and hard working. They amaze me everyday in the ways they think outside the box. My students "disabilities" are mild and moderate intellectual "disability" and autism. My students LOVE books. I get asked at least 10 times a day when we are going back to the library. My biggest classroom management "problem" is keeping them away from the bookshelf during instructional time and not taking too many books to lunch or recess. They are very curious and enjoy learning about new things. They learn best and are most engaged with hands on activities. They want to be involved all the time and are very active and excited learners. Almost everyday all of my students return their homework.

My Project

I am requesting 12 sets of 10 national geographic readers series books. The books topics are mostly animals and some history/geography. The National Geographic Readers Series books are more age appropriate than most books with lower vocabulary. My students literacy ranges from being able to identify no letters to reading on a 1st grade level. All of my students are able to recall facts from books that I have read aloud once they see the pictures again. The National Geographic books have excellent photographs. It is so important for my students to work on comprehension skills, communication skills, and to be exposed to new topics. Having sets of books will allow my students to take them home and share with their families what they are learning at school. My students have difficulties with communication and sets of books will help bridge the gap between the classroom and home for my students.

My students are breaking down stereotypes that have been put on students with "disabilities" everyday.

They ask questions and rephrase ideas in ways I would never think of. New National Geographic books that my students can bring home with them will give them the opportunity to explore and discuss things they may never have been exposed to, while increasing their literacy skills.
