Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school has students from pre-K through 6th grade. Approximately 70% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We also have a high English language learner population. Many of our students come from immigrant families and speak a second language at home. My students come from hardworking families, often with parents working multiple jobs to make ends meet.

I would love to provide my students with the skills they require to be financially literate from an early age, so they understand how to better plan for their future while developing 21st-century skills.

I have been running after-school STEM clubs at my school for the past three years. I would like to provide my students with a more streamlined experience, exposing them to up-to-date research in the 21st-century STEM skills required to compete for the best jobs. To accomplish this, I need to advance my own learning and gain relevant professional development.

My Project

I need to renew my National Board for Professional Teaching Standard Certification. Doing my National Boards ten years ago was one of the best teacher development opportunities I have engaged in. The National Board renewal process will help me be reflective on my teaching practice and instructional decisions.

The National Boards process is a year-long journey that helps teachers reflect on their teaching practice and serve students with a higher quality instruction.

Research shows that students of National Board certified teachers, are provided a more rounded learning experience. Going through the process helps teachers be more reflective on their teaching practice, and helps them dig deep into instructional practices and goals. Students receive a higher level of instruction, as the Renewal process requires teachers to put in hours of Professional Development, and then apply that knowledge to their classroom practice.

I plan on implementing a STEM Lesson for my students and having students focus on writing through the Scientific Notebooking process. I will be heading out for 8 days of professional development between now and the end of the year, and will design a Robotics Unit based on this professional development. Students will learn the integration of Literacy Language Arts into all subject areas through this process.

I am now at the point where I need to renew my National Board Certification by creating a portfolio of Professional Development I have participated in and how this has impacted my teaching practice.

Like any profession, it is an extremely valuable experience whenever you get an opportunity to sit back and reflect on your practice. With the ever-changing landscape of education, this is something every teacher should have the opportunity to do.
