Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the best job in the world! I have the privilege of working with 20 Pre-Kindergarten students who come to school every day with a sense of curiosity and wonder about the world they live in. It is my privilege to use their inquisitiveness to help them develop socially, emotionally, academically and physically.

"Can you come home with me for a play date?" is a question I have been asked by more than one student.

Although my students are a diverse group of children who come from all types of cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, they share a universal love of play. So when I am invited over for a play date, I usually suggest that we have a play date at school where, during recess, we will play hopscotch, jump rope, hula hoop, and do just about anything that will help us get moving and exercising. My goal is to help all my students lead healthier and more active lives, and I plan to accomplish this goal by incorporating more physical activity into their school day.

My Project

One of the most popular events at our school is Career Day. Parents come and present our students with information on various career choices. My students' favorite Career Day presenter, however, was a yoga instructor. She gave each child their own individual yoga mat and then lead them in several yoga poses.

The children loved practicing yoga and giggled when they heard the names of poses such as the Happy Baby and the Downward Dog.

The parent yoga instructor received thunderous applause at the conclusion of her presentation. During the question and answer period, students asked questions such as "Can you come back and do this with us another day?" and "How about every Friday?"

My students' questions inspired me to increase their exercise and movement by incorporating activity mats and yoga into our daily schedule. I plan to have students first use Let's Get Moving Activity Mats to develop their cardiovascular strength through activities such as jumping, hopping, marching and skipping. Afterwards, we will then use our kid yoga mats and Dvds to practice yoga poses. Practicing yoga, helps students strengthen muscles, increase flexibility and, develop balance and coordination while also exposing them to self soothing and calming strategies. By incorporating activity mats and yoga into our daily schedule, I can accomplish my goal of helping my students lead healthier and more active lives.
