This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Picture a group of kids who are growing up in homeless housing. That's my room. As one of the few states that guarantee family housing, our shelters are overflowing. The state has purchased temporary apartment housing near our school, and well over half of our population is in our area for a short, undetermined amount of time. With 100% of our student body receiving free breakfast, lunch, and snack, school is their safe place.
Despite obstacles that would be too much for many adults, they remain to be bright, funny, and fun-loving, and they really enjoy the safety and security that school brings.Our school not only keeps the kids safe, but it's a place where learning comes alive and is so fun!
My Project
Have you ever wanted to meet your hero? That person who inspires you daily to be the best version of yourself, and put goodness out in the world? I have this dream for my students, daily.
Shooting for the moon, we want to create the SURPRISE of the century and make that one of a kind experience available to my lovely looping learners, by bringing their absolute, all-time favorite, Cosmic Kids Yoga creator and innovator, Jaime Amor over from England and right into our school here in the USA.
What Cosmic Kids and most especially, Jaime, means to the kids in school is difficult to put into words. She means mindfulness and yoga practice for sure, but also consistency to a group of students who have experienced a myriad of trauma and change in their lives. She is the voice we begin every test with, every afternoon with, and even spurred us on to begin our very own yoga program for families at home.
Part one of this three-part project will cover airfare for Cosmic Kids presenters, as the Presentation Fee has been amazingly and wondrously waived for this occasion. The very fact she has agreed to pencil us into an extraordinarily big schedule is humbling in and of itself. We look forward to spending the day doing yoga our guru! Each grade level will have a presentation and be able to perform yoga with Jaime. We have no doubt this will remain one of the highlights of the students’ year at the close of the school.
