My Project

Making meaning in a mathematics classroom can be a difficult task for students. My goal is to help students learn to find connections between different representations in mathematics to help them understand the meaning behind problems.

The students at our school are made up of an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population.

Forty-six percent of the population is considered economically disadvantaged. They have chosen to opt out of the traditional high school because they recognized that experience was not ideal for their educational vision. Our students choose to come to a school that focuses on science and math, choosing core science and math classes as their electives for high school credit.

The State Standards for Mathematics puts a large emphasis on identifying the connections between different mathematical representations. Students are asked to look at tables and describe the characteristics of the corresponding graphs and equations. This deep understanding of mathematics is difficult for students to grasp because it requires time and effort devoted to number crunching and data analysis by hand. The TI-Nspire calculators allow students to view multiple representations of mathematics at once, enabling the students to see connections between the representations more easily. The TI-Nspire calculators have the capability to integrate science projects into math class by creating spreadsheets from data gathered using scientific probes that can then be analyzed and shared with the class wirelessly. With these powerful machines, students can make their learning more meaningful and more accessible.

Mathematics is best learned through application.

These calculators give students the ability to visualize data, and make their own connections. The ability to use the calculators across the curriculum makes them the ideal choice for enhancing the collaboration between math and science classes making science the driving force behind the mathematics.
