In our classroom we are given the opportunity to expand our curriculum and learning through ‘āina project based learning which allows our students to learn more about different local problems we face here in Hawai‘i + the impact it has on our people and our islands. In second grade, we are learning about our native forest birds and their impact to our ecosystem and our forests. With these tools, we will be able to show case the different things our ancestors would create using the feathers of our native birds + also to create designs and apparel that students are able to home to share of how important these birds truly are to our people + the different ways we can care for these birds far more then just in our classroom.
The press tool will allow our students to create native bird apparel to share during our family walk through day that we will have on campus reflecting our ‘āina based project.
The feathers and tools will be used to create art that our ancestors once created using the feathers of our native forests birds.
