Help me give my students the chance to experience the magic and beauty of making theater by using professional sound and lighting equipment to build our Cunningham Black Box theater.
My students are excited and eager to explore Theater Arts – they live in South Brooklyn and some travel by bus and subway to be a part of the Cunningham community. We are a Title I school and most of my students have not had the opportunity to be exposed to the beauty and magic of the theater. My students are courageous, strong and passionate. They are children who live in an urban environment and carry with them all the hopes, dreams and fears that come with living in NYC. They have the acting bug and need the space and tools to make their dreams a reality.
My Project
We are building a theater community in our school and our dream is to turn a classroom into a functioning, small black box theater. A space where students can walk in and immediately feel that magical energy of the theater. We are starting from scratch and the sound and lightening equipment will allow the students to begin to make their dream into a reality. My students inspire me everyday giving them the opportunity to use professional lights and sound to create art would be a gift.
The Cunningham Black Box Theater will offer a safe, creative space which fosters growth, confidence and human connection.
Students will learn how to use the lights and sound equipment to produce and devise unique, personal theater pieces to share with the school and community.
My students inspire me to be the best teacher I can be. They overcome hardships each day, yet still have the drive to succeed. They want to create and explore the arts and they deserve the best theater education possible. Our black box will give them a theater foundation which can be the start of a successful future that will open doors they never thought possible.
