My Students
My students are all refugees, coming from a multitude of countries, including Syria, Congo, Burma (Myanmar), Nepal and Iraq. During the 2016-2017 school year, I will have the privilege of teaching newly arrived students from all over the world.
These students will have been in the United States for less than six months, often with little academic experience in their native language.
It will be my job to provide a safe, positive learning environment, helping them unlock their potential without fear.
My Project
My students are learning letters, sounds and phonemes (groups of letters that make sounds “ea” says /eeee/ etc. ). The materials I am requesting will provide opportunities for independent practice of the skills students are learning in class.
The fun colors and pictures engage students, keeping them interested in their work.
They also foster learning of vocabulary which is equally important for English Language Learners.
In addition to the academic benefit of these activities, students will also benefit from the social emotional activity of sharing both materials and ideas. They will help each other identify sounds and write letters cooperatively.
