Mystery Books for Third Grade Super Sleuths!

My Students

Every day, I have the privilege of being able to see two dozen smiling students, eager and ready to learn. I teach in an urban school with students from a wide range of backgrounds. After almost a year of remote learning, my students have made the switch to hybrid learning. Providing appropriate tools to reach students where they are is more important than ever!

One of the biggest needs for my students right now is the chance to engage in and devour a wide range of amazing books.

We have worked hard in remote learning, and moving to a hybrid model emphasizes the need for students to have materials at their level. Many of my students are English language learners, and my class ranges widely in reading strengths and needs. However, they are all eager to learn and to enjoy a great book!

My Project

We just started a brand-new reading unit on mystery books, and my students are enamored! The mystery genre is one students are inherently familiar with through movies and TV shows, but most of my students had never touched a mystery book before.

My third graders are eager to play the role of crime solver in mysteries of their very own.

During our class read aloud of The Absent Author, my young learners are predicting, using clues, rereading for evidence, and using a wide range of reading skills to navigate the text. My goal is to put mystery books in the hands of each student so they can make these discoveries in other books as well. This project will provide my hybrid students with access to a wide range of mystery books, including Encyclopedia Brown, Nancy Drew, and other series. There will be more than enough for each student to find a book that is just right for them, while encouraging conversation and critical thinking among students reading books within the same series.
