My Students

We sponsor a Writers Week, during which published authors, staff members and students perform their work. This year we plan to add a portion that pairs students with writers in small groups to work on improving their work. We would like to gift these students with a journal.

We have approximately 1400 students in grades 10-12.

We are the largest of four schools in our rural county, and many of our students are on free or reduced lunch. We are working on improving literacy, through reading and writing. This will be the third year of sponsoring Writers Week, which gives the students a chance to meet published authors, as well as a chance to perform their own work, and hear their teachers perform as well.

My Project

Each year students who wish to perform their work for their peers during Writers Week submit their work, which is judged by teachers. The winners perform along side published authors, peers and teachers. We're adding a component this year, having students work with published authors to improve their work. We would like to present these students with a journal, to not only acknowledge their work up to this point, but to give them a special place to collect their work.

This gives us a chance to encourage those who have the courage to submit their work for critique by published authors.

It also shows our students that we respect the opinion of others by giving them a chance during our school day to work with people who are in the business of writing.
