My Voice Matters: Empowering Families to Support Communication at Home

My Project

All children deserve to be heard, and with the right tools, families can help make that happen. For many of my preschool students with disabilities, spoken language is not their primary form of communication. Instead, they rely on tools like picture symbols, communication boards, sign language, or technology to share their voice. But too often, families don’t have access to these same tools at home, which can lead to frustration, isolation, and missed opportunities for connection.

This project—"My Voice Matters"—aims to bridge that gap by giving families the tools and training they need to support communication at home.

With your support, I will create customized Family Communication Kits that include visual supports, core word boards, picture exchange cards (PECS), first/then charts, and simple communication devices that empower families with children that have disabilities to strengthen communication and connection at home. These materials are tailored to each student’s unique communication style and developmental level.

But more than just materials, this project is about empowering families. Along with the tools, each kit will include easy-to-follow guides that show parents how to use these resources in everyday routines—like mealtime, playtime, or getting ready for bed. These tools mirror what we use in the classroom, creating consistency across school and home that is essential for communication development.
