My students need to walk into an orginized and inviting classroom so that they can focus on their studies. Being able to see the flow of the day will help them to feel comfortable and confident.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Hello! I have the pleasure starting my teaching career with 6 amazing kids! My students are diagnosed with autism and other disabilities. They face challenges brought on by their diagnosis every day and struggle to communicate. They all come from low income areas and each student uses an AAC device for communication.
Despite they’re disabilities they strive and work hard every single day and come in everyday with big smiles on their faces, eager and ready to learn.
My students are each very special in their own ways and I am determined to whatever I can to help meet their needs.
That being said, as a first time teacher walking into an empty canvas of a classroom, I want to create a warm and welcoming environment for my students to come to everyday. I want our classroom to be well organized so that the students know exactly what to expect and what is expected of them. I plan to accomplish this with the items I have requested below.
My Project
My project will make a difference in my student’s ability to learn and function throughout the school day. My classroom is composed of 6 students on the autism spectrum. They need to know exactly what to expect throughout their day and what is expected of them.
I plan to use these materials to organize our classroom in a way that will create a sense of comfort and understanding of our daily activities for all my students.
I will use the wall pocket storage organizers to create individual folders for each student that will hold their daily work. These will be separated into subjects such as ELA, Math, and Reading comprehension and so on. I will use the other pockets folder to list the daily schedule for students to visually see throughout the day. This will create a sense of comfort and control for them because they can refer back to the schedule to know what to expect next. Many of these students do not like change and have trouble with transitions; these organizers will help them elevate some of that stress. I will use the lamination machine, lamination sheets and Velcro dots to create interactive work utilizing the PECS system for some of my nonverbal students that cannot yet read.
I have also requested some math manipulatives and sight word activities to enhance their understanding in both of these areas. I truly feel that having a well-organized classroom for my students will help them to thrive. They will be able to focus on their work and not have to worry about where to find the items they need. Everything will always be neatly organized in the same location which will help to encourage independence in the students as they will be able to go and get their supplies themselves.
