This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are students with autism who have a love for reading, writing, and social studies. I currently have forty students in my two special education classes. The students in my classroom are vibrant, excited and eager to learn. They come from a low-income, high-poverty school district.
Many parents are not able to provide the life experiences that many of us would see as “typical.” It is my honor to educate these students, and I always strive to provide the best educational experiences.
"Energetic" and "excited to learn" are the best ways I can describe my students. The majority of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our school has been categorized as one of the lowest 300 schools in the state.
My Project
My students are in the beginning stages of reading. These books will allow students to expand their reading beyond the classroom, enriching their experiences. The goal is to develop a life long love for reading, while enhancing comprehension skills to boost academic achievement.
Providing these books will increase the students' exposure to texts and literature they would otherwise not encounter.
The goal is an elevated appetite for reading, learning and growing. Our school budget has been drastically lowered, and the school does not have a media specialist to encourage leisurely reading.
As a teacher, I believe it is imperative to the success of our students to have books they can read outside of an assigned lesson that will inspire and entertain them.
