Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm a music teacher for all levels. I travel between two schools. I keep myself open to teaching my students whatever is of interest to them, available and needed for their greatest and highest good. My goal is always to give students a love for music and hopefully create a mentally, physically and soulfully healing outlet.
Music brings inspirational happiness to my students and to all who listen and watch us perform.
Despite the hardships, students come with big smiles and leave with a strong confident BEAT in their step and a warm healthy loving song in their heart.
With children arriving from all over the world, the population is very diverse, high poverty inner-city, low-income households. Many have experienced trauma and carry significant emotional/behavioral concerns.
But you wouldn’t know that by their excitement and enthusiasm when I walk into their presences.
“MUSIC TIME!!!!” “Can we play…,” “I got new cool beats!?!” “What do you have for us today?!” “I am going to be a famous musician!!!” “Check this out!!!” “Did you see my new music video?”
And that’s just walking down the hallway and running into any one of my fabulous musicians.
My Project
I teach music to several ages and grade levels. This technology will help teach constructive criticism through video/audio critiques and to perform on instruments worldwide. Garageband, music symbol, and a variety of music knowledge/instrument apps will open opportunities regarding composition, reading and music lessons. Using similar technology in music class, that many students have in their homes, exposes all to learning, practicing, focusing, and motivating them to continue outside of the school setting. The portability will allow me to reach more students traveling room to room and school to school; cutting down set up time and increasing time on task.
"Thank you so much!" "I want to be part of that!" and "My Turn...My Turn...I call dibs" says many students benefiting from the donors who helped to fund my project titled, "Upbeat to an Alternative High School Recording Studio."
The experience opened a Universe of instrumental opportunities for all 500+ of my students. Donors funded a beautiful set of CYMBALS with stands, which I added to my personal instruments to make a 30+ piece Orff/PERC. ensemble. At first glance, my students' faces/hearts lit up, behaviors change positively, and I was welcomed into their quiet/focused learning place.
I am asking for an Apple iPad with EVERYTHING PROOF portable speaker w/PAIRING capability; great for concerts outside. I have many uses for this: recording studio thru Garageband app, a multi-musical instrument for learning/performing on instruments I can't afford and more. This iPad will allow me to create/save multi-track versions of music we will work on during ensembles. Tracks can be played separately to help students develop aural skills like hearing, singing, feeling and playing by ear. I have all wires/midi keyboard ready. I've already started! It's a hit, but I'm borrowing an iPad that needs to be returned...soon!!
