My Students

We are an amazing group of fourth grade students in central Indiana who work hard every day, focusing on growth and learning from mistakes. My students know that mistakes are an opportunity, not something to be ashamed of.

Many of our school's students are from refugee families who come from countries such as Burma, Syria, Somalia, and Uganda.

Our Burmese population is our largest refugee group, and after more than a decade of supporting these families, we have students of all levels of English proficiency, from fluent speaker to those just beginning.

My Project

Current assessment systems including the Scholastic Reading Inventory and our annual state tests give teachers a starting point, but these are woefully lacking details and specifics about students' abilities. Access to the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System will allow each teacher in our grade level to complete a full reading assessment for each individual student. Information gained through these assessments will help us make vital decisions about how to shape instruction for every child.

The Fountas & Pinnell Reading Assessment system will give teachers crucial information regarding students' reading strengths and needs.

This will help us immensely. For example, many students are often classified as reading "on grade level," but these readers may have very different needs. One student might have strong comprehension but poor word attack skills. Another student might have weak fluency, and a third student might struggle to make meaning from a text. Knowing this will inform teachers' instruction and will help students succeed. Thank you for your support.
