This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My biggest challenge (and subsequently, my biggest goal) is getting my students excited about books. I want to show them that books can be exciting. Books can teach you about the world around you and about worlds you would never otherwise experience. I hope to accomplish this every year.
My students are bright, funny and (sometimes) eager to learn.
They deserve the world, but unfortunately, it's not that easy. Our school is very large and sometimes they can get lost in the shuffle, but I try my hardest to ensure that there is never a dull moment or a child who blends into the wallpaper in my classroom.
My Project
For this unit, we will be exploring texts that deal with social issues. The one thing that always shocks me about my students is how much they don't know about the world around them. Through these novels, I hope to open their eyes to many issues that they wouldn't otherwise encounter. We will then be not only discussing these issues in class, but the students will be responsible for coming up with and enacting a plan on how they will raise awareness for their group's individual issue in our school and our community.
My goal is to create excited and aware young adults and by teaching them more about the world they live in and the struggles they may not yet understand, I hope to accomplish this.
