This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world.” - David Warlick. Today every part of our life is connected to technology and all classrooms need it.
My students are wonderful, energetic learners in an urban city, and do not have access to the same technology our neighbors in other affluent districts have.
Our school is one of the largest in the state, with many students who are learning English as a second language, and receive resource students. We once had access to technology, but as years have gone by, what we had has become obsolete and is no longer working. To have a classroom today with no working student computers is unacceptable. In order for my students to access learning activities and be prepared for college and careers, they must have regular, purposeful, meaningful access to technology on a regular basis.
My Project
My students would use these chromebooks daily to access online resources across subject areas. They will be able to research topics, use manipulatives for math, and view content-related videos to name a few uses. They will also be able to access intervention programs available in my district, but not to my students because of the lack of technology, such as MyOn (reading program), Lexia (reading intervention), i-Ready (math instruction and intervention) and others. Our Science program offers videos and interactive activities that my students can use to get a deeper understanding of these concepts, however we cannot access it. Students are also required to take high-stakes tests on the computer, but my students are unable to have regular access to use computers. Having this access will allow them to regularly practice skills like using the mouse/trackpad or typing.
Donations to this project will bring my students into this century.
Today, technology is a part of how students learn all over the country. In order to compete, my students must be technologically literate. Further, while my district does offer several quality programs for students to use to close gaps in their knowledge or practice their skills, they require the presence of computers in the classroom. My students need chromebooks that they are able to learn to use regularly in order to succeed.
