Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach orchestra in 3 different elementary schools. Many of my students are underprivileged. There are many times that I have a student using a subpar instrument. It would make all of the difference in the world for those kids to have a little help with a usable equipment such as bows, shoulder rests, and books.
Some of my students cannot afford shoulder rests, and I try to provide them with a usable one.
Playing the violin is much easier with a shoulder rest, especially for beginners.
I like to provide the students with a pencil pouch attached to their case with a carabiner to keep their shoulder rest attached (so it doesn't get lost). Most of the student violin/viola cases are not large enough to hold their shoulder rests.
In addition, a few students each year are unable to afford our music textbook. If I could provide the books for those students, they'd be able to practice their instruments at home. There would be a lot less stigma for them if they didn't have to borrow my book every time.
