My Project

My lower elementary students really enjoy coming to the library and choosing a book to check out for the week. For some, it's a really big deal that they take very seriously! The task of choosing a book helps them to tie all of the library skills we learn into one activity of properly browsing, using decision-making skills, and practicing library routine procedures of using a shelf marker properly in making their book choice and checking it out for the week. It's a big job for little friends. Currently, my lower elementary students choose from carts filled with exciting and engaging books, but because we are still learning how to use a shelf marker and how to keep books on the shelf without them falling off, this arrangement limits their time they have to browse and choose books.

Having a book organizer cart would make it easy for students to choose their book easily and quickly, while still having time to browse and easily see the covers of the books.

As their fine-motor skills improve with physical development, we can begin using the shelf markers by grade 2 or 3, but for lower grades, having an easy way of browsing books quickly would be a huge game-changer for our little friends. This Jonti-Craft mobile book organizer would provide this for us. Students would be able to efficiently choose books they are satisfied with and will enjoy week after week.

Also included in this project are materials that will help keep the library organized. Numerous books are needing repair and their labels are either faded or missing. The label maker and clear label covers will help volunteers and I get our current books in the best shape possible for our students so that materials will last as long as possible.
