How many grams is your pencil? With new balances in the classroom, my students will be able to answer this question and more. The balances that I inherited with my classroom are broken (with the exception of one that I purchased with my own money). They could easily be 20 years old or more.
I currently have a great bunch of third grade students: 8 boys and 10 girls.
They enjoy participating in hands-on activities. Many of my students have one or more parent in the military and have moved extensively. When they arrive in my classroom, they often are somewhat behind due to gaps in learning from one school system to another.
Our school is a small public school and is considered high-poverty based on the percentage of students that receive free/reduced lunch. It is located in a small town with a large military base, so most people in the town are affiliated with the military in one way or another.
My Project
With your support, our class can provide a retirement party for the balances in our class that have worked so hard for so many students over the last couple of decades; and we can welcome new, working balances to learn about mass and weight. We can use these balances and scale in math, as well as in science, as we make and record observations and measurements.
Our class already has several sets of "Gramstackers" which are masses in units of 1g, 5g, 10g, 20g and 50g to use with the balances, so all we need is your help to be on the road to hands-on measurement activities.
I believe that having a good set of balances is important for the students to develop a concrete understanding of weight and mass.
It is difficult to expect children to learn to estimate mass of objects if they never have the opportunity to actually measure the mass of objects! Please help fulfill this project by considering a donation. It will be greatly appreciated my students now and for many years into the future. Thank you so much!
