This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a middle school reading teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. I teach students who are low in reading to bring them up to their correct level. I also teach one class of honors students who are trying to better themselves and get high school credits done early. They are hardworking students who have had some gaps in their education and have difficult home lives.
My Project
I saw a poster once somewhere where the jist of it was your student may have forgotten a pencil but they got their little brother fed and ready for school today. They did laundry for their family so they had clean uniforms for school. Sometimes bringing a pencil to class is something they are not thinking about. That being said it has been a struggle to keep my students in pencils. I try to collect them daily after each class but some ask to keep them for the day because other teachers don’t provide them. How can I say no?
The other items on my wish list are something that I never thought would work.
In any lesson if I include post it notes for them to answer on or give me their thoughts they are beyond excited and engaged! The chart paper will be used to make interactive charts where they can answer questions or give their feedback!
