Help me give my students fitness games that my students can keep active while having fun with their families. The pedometers have always been a great motivator for my students to hit daily step goals.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students do not have basic physical activity materials like jump-ropes, hula-hoops, scooters, or bicycles because most of my students live in apartment buildings and don't have access to a backyard. I give my kids options to substitute physical education equipment and many do not have those substitute items in their household.
I teach physical education in a Title I school in NYC.
A lot of students have also been expressing concerns that they can not go outside or see their friends because our state is on a pause order. A lot of my students are scared because of the pandemic. Many of them love talking on Google Meets about the latest shows on Netflix or reminisce about all the fun activities we did during the traditional day in my physical education class to distract themselves from this scary virus.
My Project
The fitness game "Fitivities", is a great way for families to bond with their children in an active way. The fitness game also gives my students an opportunity for a much-needed distraction during this scary pandemic.
My students currently reside in the epicenter of this pandemic and express to me that they are having a hard time and are currently having nightmares.
I believe the pedometers would motivate my students to be more active indoors which can also greatly reduce their stress levels and give them an opportunity for better sleep.
