Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students look out over the historical horizon in search of answers that tell them how the United States became a great nation of the world. Who made history during the battles, conflicts, and victories of this land? Help my students answer this question by reading Red Badge of Courage.

The school services students from an inner city community of Southern California.

The majority of our students are either African American or Hispanic and are bused every day from housing projects to a residential district on the west side of the city. As a Title I school in which 90% are on the free or reduced lunch program, not many of the students have access to cultural experiences that enhance their educational experience. Never the less, my special education students are intelligent, inquisitive, and hungry for knowledge. Every day the classroom is a hive of activity buzzing with energy. The more opportunities I offer and variety of media used to communicate the subject only makes my students more motivated to learn.

My Project

My students need the audio package and 30 copies of the Red Badge of Courage. The challenge of every history teacher is how to make the past relevant and meaningful to the youth of today. What better way then to present a personal account of a time when our country was dramatically divided about principles and values and the survival of so many Americans that had fought for freedom during the War of Independence. Red Badge of Courage tells the story of a young boy who felt that fighting in the Civil War was the right decision. All the glory and glamour of a young boys spirit of valor is suddenly challenged by the reality and cruelty of the battle field. So often, my students imagine that being part of another war, gang turf, is equally enchanting. But, when faced with the reality of blood and death, the truth is exposed. I hope that the story of this boy will not only help the students to learn about the tragedy of war, but the reality of today's conflict between communities in the neighborhoods of today's urban world.

Students in middle school are going through the most important formative years during which the foundation for personal values and character is laid.

I know that with your help I can engage my students in meaningful discussions, thoughtful reflection and powerful expressions that will last them a life time. Please donate to provide a forum that offers an alternative to what otherwise might be perceived as destiny..."once a ________________ always a _________________." You fill in the blanks.
