Help our struggling readers! Our students cannot read grade level reading materials and therefore struggle to access the general education curriculum. Ipods help make this possible by allowing students to access audio versions of texts. Ipods have opened up a new world of opportunities for them!
Simply put, our students are awesome!
We teach in an urban middle school that features an environmental focus. Our curriculum teaches students about the interconnectedness of the physical and human environments. Thus, they are encouraged to learn through active learning experiences and are involved in service learning projects centered around environmental themes. This has made them incredibly aware and caring about the environment. Our school has also adopted the Responsive Classroom model, which teaches that the social curriculum is just as important as the academic one. We teach our children cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self control, and, as a result, my students truly care about and are kind to one another. They are accepting of each other's learning differences and have grown to value the diversity of our student body.
My Project
I am part of a team of middle school special education teachers at a full inclusion school. This means that all of our students are in general education classrooms with appropriate support from learning specialists. Our students are fully included in the curriculum with appropriate accommodations. Ipods help make these accommodations possible by allowing students to stay in class with their classmates during in-class assessments and projects that require reading accommodations. We are able to record instructions, directions and assessment questions to be played on the ipods during class. Many of our students also rely on audio versions of text in order to fully participate in the curriculum. Ipods allow these students to be in the classroom with their peers while this accommodation is being provided.
Your donations can make a true difference in the lives of our students.
Think back to your days in middle school. Think about how would it feel to not be able to read--especially as a "pre-teen". You can make a huge difference by supporting our project, which will allow our struggling middle school readers to access the general education curriculum without adult assistance. Ipods mean independence for our learners, which, in turn, inspires their commitment in becoming life long readers!
