My Special Education Students are Little Builders!
The cost of two construction workers costumes, two mini safety goggles, and a play tool bench from ABC School Supply, Inc. is $160, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
Hi, I am the special education teacher in a kindergarten inclusion class in Brooklyn. My class consists of students who have a range of disabilities. Some of these children show delays in the areas of speech and motor skills. We are a Title I, early-childhood center. Approximately seventy-five percent of our students receive free lunch.
During a theme unit of "Community Workers," my students seemed very interested in the work of carpenters. While we read many books about all types of community helpers, they were most fascinated with that profession. During playtime, some students would pretend they were fixing a table by using a pencil to hammer a crayon into the leg of the table. While this was very imaginative, I would like to give them the opportunity to use more life-like tools and materials in their dramatic play center.
I am asking for a Build and Play Tool Bench, Safety Goggles, and a Construction Worker costume set from ABC School Supplies. Playing with these realistic materials can be very beneficial to my students with disabilities. Some children in my class have delays in their fine motor skills. Their tiny hands have not gained enough strength to complete certain tasks such as holding a pencil or crayon to write clearly. By using play tools such as a large plastic hammer or screwdriver, they would be working on building the muscles in their hands so that they will soon be able to button their own coat or tie their own shoe laces.
This donation would also benefit my students who have speech delays. Some of these children are very quiet and do not like to speak. I am hoping that creating realistic moments in our classroom based on our community workers theme and their interest in carpenters would foster an opportunity for these students to express themselves in different ways.
A donation of this tool bench and supplies could create a wonderful and fun opportunity to help my students with special needs.
Thank you.
