Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a Title I/Urban district with students who come from various socioeconomic backgrounds and experiences. Our school has a heavy focus on Social/Emotional Learning (SEL), where we create an environment that all children feel safe in and can reach their greatest potential. In order to fulfil the needs of each child, I need a large comfortable space where we can meet every morning as a group, and focus on our SEL. Each child in my classroom loves learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are! These students will benefit greatly from your help!

My Project

Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent and group work times they have the opportunity to choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.

My students are excited and noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.
