My Students

My goal is to foster a love of learning while helping my students make necessary reading growth and gain critical thinking capabilities. Last year my students showed exceptional determination and made transformational growth by increasing by 14 points, equivalent to roughly a year and a half of growth, on the end-of-year assessment. This year I would like to increase this growth by ensuring that more students reach their growth goals, as well as put an emphasis on cultivating a genuine interest in the world around them.

For many of my third graders, school is the safest, most positive place they can be.

In our classroom, they are able to temporarily forget about the potentially volatile circumstances of their home lives and immerse themselves in reading, writing, and learning. My boys and girls are resilient, spirited, and most of all--curious! They are hungry for new knowledge and opportunities. Please help me feed this curiosity with current magazines, books, and supplies for our classroom library!

My Project

My students start the year independently reading at various levels—some are not yet reading while others are fluent with fifth-grade material.

To ensure every child leaves the classroom with increased opportunities, we focus on urgently bettering our reading levels through individual progress, as well as drawing thoughtful conclusions about the information we attain from texts.

My students know where they begin, understand what steps to take to improve, and they fervently track their progress. Students often ask if I can listen to them read because they’re proud of their newfound fluency.

However, for my students to practice reading we need more texts. Most of my students do not have access to texts outside of the classroom. Our school does not utilize a library time to check out books, and while there is a public library nearby, it is unsafe to walk there.

I want our classroom library to be inviting to all of my students - filled with books and magazines that can help them practice their reading skills and also quench their thirst for knowledge. This includes books on a variety of reading levels, texts of differing genres, stories with characters that look like my students, and topics that interest them. Due to numerous student requests from last year, I'm now ordering Time For Kids magazine in multiple editions (grades 1-4) so that all of my students can enjoy it. This magazine is printed weekly and includes current events, high-interest articles, and brain games for students. Please help us become readers and leaders!
