My Poetry Anthology

My students need 40 Avery Flip Back View Binder, 400 sheet protectors, and 20 copies of "Poetry 180" edited by Poet Laureate Billy Collins to create their own poetry anthology.

I have been teaching at a public alternative high school for 33 years. We teach the students who have had a myriad of problems, disappointments, and have usually experienced failure in the traditional school setting. Over the years, I have found poetry to be an inspiring genre that engages students regardless of their academic ability level, cultural heritage, age, etc. As part of an 8 week Poetry class, the students create their own poetry anthology--a collection of their favorite poems. They read hundreds of poems from the classroom library, Internet, and notebooks of original student poetry (written by former students and present students in the school). Each student is the editor of their own collection. They type the poems themselves in the computer lab, choosing their own fonts and illustrations to compliment the poems. The poems they read inspire them to write their own poems and connect to poets all over the world, as well as in their classroom. I need 3 ring binders and sheet protectors to hold the anthologies. I would also like a classroom set (20) of Poet Laureate Billy Collins' anthology, Poetry 180,to use as a text. This book was specifically designed to interest high school students and has an on-line link with additional poems and inspirational ideas. This project helps prepare students for college by requiring independent research (using our classroom library, public library and the Internet); it requires use of the Microsoft word program for writing and editing; and is part of a larger class curriculum which includes a group project that incorporates graphic arts, PowerPoint, music and presentation skills. Classes that promote literacy, technology, the arts, and team work prepare students by improving their skills in these areas as well as giving them experience in the kind of assignments they will have in college. In addition to this particular project, our school is very active in encouraging students to continue their education after graduation. Although we are a small school, we have a career counselor who works full time to provide students with assistance in college applications, financial aid and scholarship applications, community college-high school partnership program opportunities, vocational aptitude testing, employment opportunities, etc. I spend a lot of my own money on classroom library books and supplies because our school doesn't have a library and our text book and supply budget is small(non-existent this year). I would be very grateful for some help acquiring the materials I need to make the Poetry Class a success again this year.
