Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Different color skin tone art supplies allow students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that best represent them. During creative work times they choose the color supplies and create pictures and artwork of themselves, their classmates and their families. Currently my students have a limited variety of colors in their art supplies: supplies like construction paper, colored pencils, and foam board. Making sure students are able to create accurate representations of themselves in their artwork is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice with colors that they feel match their own skin tone. They are more engaged and get more excited to complete their work than when they are given limited options.

My students are noticeably more connected to their work and take more ownership of their projects when they are given a choice of art supplies that represent them.

The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional options to make more authentic choices. The face and people cutouts will allow students to create self portraits that accurately reflect their own unique face. The variety of skin tone colored pencils will provide students with the opportunity to create pictures that reflect the beautiful diversity we have in our school and our community.

I have seen how realistic skin colored art products can positively affect my students' work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us show the beautiful diversity that exists in our community.
