My Students
Notebooks are boring. Documenting is boring. There...I said it! I want my kindergarten class to make their notebooks come alive!
My kindergarten students are energetic, happy children.
They bounce in each morning with a smile, eager to learn! Each child walks into our classroom knowing their day will be filled with discovery and excitement. These children come from our inner city area. Their home lives are filled with worry..worry about food, money, and the future. Our school is located in the heart of this poor area. We provide free meals, healthy snacks for weekends, and any extra resource that we can in order to make the lives of the students better. My students do not have many experiences outside of school. Due to a lack of money, they cannot go to events or places that will help them grow socially or academically. I do everything I can to fill this void in their lives. Whether it be through literature, the arts, mathematical practice, or getting their hands dirty with science, I will take all opportunities to help their minds grow and to foster a love of learning.
My Project
Research, documenting, and proving facts all begin in kindergarten. It can be a daunting task for five years old, as well as the teacher. I want my students to see that these requirements can be engaging, not a dreaded chore. However, we need supplies to help make that happen. The notebooks will be interactive, meaning the children will use them for recording findings and discoveries in reading and math. The children will document and practice skills such as story telling, word work, and mathematical solutions. The notebooks become interactive because the children will draw, cut, paste, and use concrete objects as a means to practice reading and math. Research has shown that young children learn through doing. Interactive notebooks are a great tool to prove this.
If this project is funded, my students will have appropriate materials to create interactive notebooks.
Their beginning journey of documenting and proving results will not start out as a dreaded task. The journey will have a beginning of fun, creativity, and something that is enjoyed. Hopefully, this positive attitude will be a foundation for the years of documenting to come.
