I am a sixth year Reading Recovery teacher. I teach in a Title One school in an inner city.
Unfortunately in the urban schools, first grade is the beginning of a very long and tedious academic existence. We are not entitled to art based specials that suburban children are. We do not have art, music, foreign language and other enrichment programs. The day is reading and writing based. Every day is the same. Every day is monotonous. Every day is predictable.
I am requesting a multimedia device for podcasting. At risk, low-level readers will be able to watch podcasts on authors for author studies, research nonfiction topics and download tales and videos of all genres. Compare and contrast papers can be done on the book vs. the movie. Students will become more developed in their critical thinking and analytical ability. This will give reading and literacy a new, stimulating and exciting twist. Children will learn how to navigate the internet and handle advanced 21st century technology, as well as have fun under educational purposes.
