Art makes it possible to teach students and help them to become an informed generation about the arts in their daily lives.
I teach in an urban elementary school with students from all walks of life.
Too many live in neighborhoods with frequent, violent incidences and they come to school to escape their home lives, to be loved and as a safe haven. I teach six grade levels each week, kindergarten through 5th grades, and have each class for a one week period before rotating to the next group of six classes. This allows us time to start projects, such as sculpting, and complete them within the week. I have some wonderful little artists and they are excited to show their talents.
These students have not had many opportunities outside the regular pencil, paper, crayon and painting on paper experiences. This makes them very eager to learn about famous artists' works, various art techniques, working with their hands and having many opportunities to express their artistic abilities.
My Project
Sculpture is a form of art that involves the transformation of a solid material into a shape or form.
Sculpting helps students to develop a sense of self-discipline because it requires a lot of patience.
It also helps students to recognize that nothing comes without hard work and resilience. We teach that at our school, so it's important that I am able to carry these lessons into the at classroom.
Sculpting also helps students to develop artistic abilities, observational skills and manipulative skills. Overall, sculpting will help my students to discover important things about themselves and their perspective about the world.
