My Love of Books/Mi Amor Por Los Libros

Help me give my students sets of bilingual books to start their own library at home and share their budding love of reading with family members who speak Spanish.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a school where 90% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. My students are aged 3-5 years old, and all have Individualized Education Plans. My students are curious, full of energy and life, and always eager to learn! They love learning new skills and are proud of their own successes and those of their peers. My ultimate goal is to give my students a positive learning experience in a school setting, setting the foundation for a love of learning, and a love of school.

Students learn best through hands-on experiences and through the process rather than always having to produce a product.

We are a classroom family learning patience, empathy, and acceptance for everyone.

My Project

Books and listening to stories have become very popular in my class over the last few months and I would love to provide them with books to begin their library at home. Many of my students are English Language Learners who have parents or loved ones at home who do not speak English. Sets of bilingual books such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar/La oruga muy nambrienta, A Color of His Own/Su propio color, and 5 other bilingual titles, Mini Flopsie stuffed animals, and Simpli Magic Canvas Tote bags to each student will enable parents to be able to enjoy some of the same books we have at school with their child in a language they are familiar with.

Having books at home will help increase student's vocabulary, increase comprehension, help with developing communication skills as well as reinforce emergent literacy skills.

Students will have their own copies of books that they have read over and over by parents and soon will be able to begin reading on their own. Parents will have books in their home language to read and thus becoming role models to their children for reading in the future.

Having books for students at home to read prior to entering kindergarten will help them develop a positive approach to reading, better listening skills, and hopefully long-term academic success later in school.
