Self-Discovery is the key to becoming a better person. This is something I want to instill into my art students. I would like them to see the connections between their emotions and art. I am an elementary art teacher that teaches over 300 students. The community in which I work is a high-need community and therefore I know I need to reach my students and give them experiences and knowledge that will inspire them to know who they are and go above and beyond in their lives. Our school has so much spirit and is full of children ready to learn. Many of them are very artistic and exude so much creativity and imagination.
A lot of times in these communities special classes such as track, P.E., Art and Music provide them with a drive to come to school. This allows for them to continue taking core classes and getting their education but their true interest lies within their talents and passion for creativity. The project I would love my 5th graders to do is a project that allows them to look into themselves and find who they are on the outside and what they keep from others on the inside. They are at a point when they are beginning to find themselves and go through several emotions. Some may present themselves to others as strong and nonchalant when inside they feel helpless and hurt. The neighborhood my kids live in presents them with questions such as "Are you going to be in a gang or not" or "Will I hear a gun shot today?" Although they face issues like this there is still beauty to be found. For instance, children playing together in their yards or going to the local library together. I want to bring knowledge into their lives and help prepare them for their next step in life.
My project, "My Little Secret", focuses on how to relate emotions and art. My 5th grade students will create a 3-Dimensional box that represents themselves by what we see on the outside and show us what others may not know about them on the inside. The outside of the box represents what we see and the inside represents their 'secrets' or things we may not know about them that they carry on the inside. For example, sometimes the neighborhoods seems rough on the outside but love and joy can be found inside a great deal of these homes. I need boxes, beads, stickers, and ribbon to help my students embellish the drawing and paintings they will create inside and outside of their boxes. I will have each student and their partner take a 2 pictures of themselves- one representing a pose that shows who they are on the outside and another showing a side of them they don't share often that they keep on the inside which will be displayed on the inside of the box. This will benefit my students because it will allow for self-discovery to take place and them to realize that their surroundings don't define them and that their emotions are important and can be expressed in art.
You will make it possible for my students to do a project that is not only fun but allows them to become better people and grow as individuals. Your donations will provide them with an opportunity to explore who they are in a very creative way. My students do not all have people who care about them whether it be those in their family or leaders of our community, when they realize that someone cared enough to donate materials to enhance their love for art and education, it will let them see that their is someone out there that truly cares.
